Discover different pieces of mankind’s captivating historical puzzle by taking a journey from the Neolithic, Roman and Medieval period up to present days. Prepare yourself for the unknown!

Description and Itinerary: The tour starts from your accommodation in Belgrade and takes you to some of the most important historical landmarks in Serbia. It includes 3 major stops at the archaeological site of Vinča, the Smederevo Fortress and Roman city of Viminacium followed by a sightseeing car ride across scenic countryside.

The archaeological site of Vinča situated on the right side of the Danube River bank, not far from downtown Belgrade, embodies the very zenith of the European Neolith. The territory of today’s Serbia and the central Balkan Peninsula became a European cultural center in the period of 5300 – 4300 B.C. Archeological findings from this site have completely changed our understanding of the pre-historical humans. Some scholars believe that the Vinča symbols represent the earliest form of writing and literacy ever found, predating ancient Egyptian and Sumerian writings by thousands of years.

The Smederevo Fortress located 45 kilometers southeast of Belgrade is one of the largest lowland medieval fortresses in Europe and the last major masterpiece of Serbian architecture from the medieval period. Built in the 15th century at the confluence of the Jezava River with the Danube, it spreads on the surface of nearly 11 hectares defended by 25 towers. The fortress in Smederevo preserves rare evidence, under the large cross on the tower, of the old Serbian calendar that counts the years from “the creation of the world”, and was in force until the 19th century.

Roman city of Viminacium was once the capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior and the military camp of the Roman Legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis, dating to the 1st century A.D. The settlement on the left bank of the Mlava River used to be one of the strongholds on the famous Via Militaris, the strategically important transition point between the West and the East. This archaeological site contains the remains of streets, temples, squares, amphitheaters, palaces, hippodromes and Roman baths. A special charm to this location was given after the discovery of almost entirely preserved mammoth skeleton.
